Choose a folder

Add the folder you want to watch and grant access. Create an automation for it. In Monitoring Settings, choose whether to include subfolders, hidden files or aliases.

Set matching conditions

Create a condition set to select files by name, type, date or other properties. Use AND when every condition must match, or OR when any one can match.

Assign the condition set to a rule. If a rule has several enabled condition sets, any matching set can trigger its workflows. Use All Items to apply the rule to every eligible file.

Choose tag actions

Create a workflow with the tag actions you need, then assign it to the rule.

  • Add Tags adds chosen tags and keeps other existing tags. It applies your selected color to tags with the same name.
  • Remove Selected removes only the tag names you choose.
  • Replace Selected removes the chosen names and adds replacement tags, even if the original names are absent.

Remove All and Replace All affect the entire tag list. “Nothing” leaves tags unchanged.

Preview a sample file

Preview the condition set to check whether a file matches. Preview the workflow to check the resulting tags, including changes from actions in order. Both previews leave the sample unchanged.

Tag existing files with Play

Use the automation’s Play button to tag matching files already in the folder. Check the result in Finder and Activity. Play does not enable automatic monitoring.

Enable automatic monitoring

Enable monitoring for the automation and keep Taggy Tagger running. New, renamed and modified files are checked against its rules once they are available locally and finished being written.

Files already present when monitoring starts are left unchanged. Use Play when you want to tag them.

How rules and actions run

  • All matching enabled rules run in order. Later actions can change tags applied by earlier ones.
  • Preview workflows that remove or replace tags and check them on sample copies. Activity records results but cannot undo tag changes.
  • Date conditions are checked when a file is processed. They do not schedule tagging for a particular time.
